Happy One Year Anniversary Maximus

Auto Date Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Well, it’s the 4th of July and we are celebrating our independence day here in the U.S. Happy Independence Day to my fellow Americans.

It’s also the one year anniversary of bringing Max the Beagle into our home. I think I stated in an earlier post, that we were hesitant to take Max. He was my daughter’s dog and she was moving and could no longer keep him.

Thinking back, my wife was really against taking Max, but I talked her into giving him a try.

When I was younger there was a time I had to move and give up my dog. I was thankful that my parents took Sham in, and I know he would be well cared for. So, I felt some obligation to take Max in.

My wife was a little slow to warm up to Max. And, with all the chewing he did on furniture, toys, stuffed animals and…I can’t really remember what all he chewed up. Anyway, that did not help Max’s cause with my wife accepting him.

I don’t remember the exact turning point, but Max did something really goofy that brought a hysterical laugh from my wife. That was the beginning of the bonding period between the two of them.

In fact, a few weeks later Max did something that really made me mad - I’m sure it was related to something he chewed up (I think it was the rubber gas hose on my barbecue grill). I told my wife that I was getting tired of him chewing on everything, and told her maybe this was not going to work out. She said “we are going to keep him, the girls and I have become really attached to him”.

So, now I knew he was going to be our dog.

A few weeks later my wife asked me if our daughter happened to move again and wanted Max back, what would we do. I told her I didn’t think that would happen. Our daughter is 21 and she loved Max. But, I didn’t think she would want the responsibility of having to take care for him and the time to give Max the attention he needed.

So Max, the dog we really didn’t want, has now been with us a year and we are so happy to have him as part of our family!

Until later,
Mike

I too have a dog that sometimes we don\’t know why we keep him. But he is such a good dog and well meaning dog in so many ways. He is 10 months old, a toy poodle, and been neutered at age 7 months. Here\’s the problem. Whenever we are away, he gets in the garbage and shreds it up all over the house. I don\’t like leaving him in a crate while I\’m gone, because we have a female pug that he loves to play with and she loves him and would miss him if he were in a crate. I thought he wouldn\’t be bored if he has her to play with. Can you tell me what to do with him?
