Chewing Beagle – Is Max Normal?
Wednesday, August 1st, 2007Meet Maximus the crazy Beagle. I have put together a short video about our trying Beagle – Max.
Yes, one of the major challenges we have with Max is his chewing. I have had puppies that chewed everything in sight before. But, they always out grew the major chewing stage.
Max is now one and a half years old and is still chewing up so many things. I’m really surprised he is still alive.
We do all we can to keep things out of Max’s range (the floor) to protect him from himself. But, he still finds things to chew up and I don’t where he gets most of want he ends up with.
We have a doggy door for Max to come in and out of the house as he pleases. Almost every time I look in the back yard I will see something that Max has found and has chewed up.
Max has chewed several toys, various items from the garbage, card board boxes, and several other items.
Some of the most interesting things he has chewed up was a small medical travel kit that contained medicine like children’s Tylenol.
He chewed up my wife’s cell phone, thankfully our contract was nearly over so we were able to get new cell phones at a good price.
The glass in the video above was chewed by Max – that glass is very thick plastic. I hope he didn’t ingest any of that jagged thick plastic.
Picking up Max’s stools is always an adventure. I’m often amazed to see some of the color and materials I find in his stools.
I don’t know if Max’s chew syndrome is unique to him, or if it’s a Beagle trait.
We have given him several appropriate chew toys to satisfy his need, but he just hides and buries these treats.
We hope Max will outgrow his chew fetish because we don’t know what to do to curb his habit. Nothing we have tried works for this crazy Beagle.
Let’s just hope he doesn’t hurt himself.
