I’m sure glad I learned how to make homemade dog toys.

We love our Beagle, Maximus, but he sure can be destructive.

I can’t remember all of the items that Max has chewed on, or chewed up, here are a few of the most notable.

He chewed up my wife’s cell phone, a thick plastic glass (photo below) just about all of our wooden furniture have chew marks. Our young daughters have lost a number of various toys to Max’s chewing on things.

The thing he chewed on that upset me the most, was the rubber hose on my outdoor grill. He chewed up the hose from the propane tank to the grill (thankfully I had the gas valve off).

We try to protect Max from himself, but it is difficult. I don’t know where he gets some of the things he chews on, he is very good at finding things he should not be chewing on.

We have tried to entertain Max and distract him from chewing on things by buying him chew bones, rawhide treats etc. Instead of chewing on these things, he hides and buries them.

We have also bought Max a number of toys to play with, that he can also chew on. He loves these toys, but tends to chew them up quickly and buying these toys was getting expensive.

I got tired of spending too much money on dog toys that Max would chew up way too quickly.

So, I thought about making my own dog toys. I noticed a lot of those expensive store bought toys were nothing more than some rope, tennis balls - things I had laying around the house, or things that would not cost much to buy.

Before I got started I decide to look online to see if I could find instructions on how to build some of the dog toys I had in mind.

I’m sure glad I looked. I found a great book that teaches you how to make a number of homemade dog toys, just like those you would find at your pet superstore, but for a much lower cost.

This book provides the recipes for the homemade dog toys. It provides the materials required, and detailed instructions - saving me a lot of time and making more dog toys than I would have thought of on my own.

If you are spending too much money on dog toys that are way too expensive, it’s time you started making your own homemade dog toys. It’s not hard to do, it’s actually fun and you can save a ton of money.

Max still chews his toys up, but I can replace them quickly and the homemade dog toys are so inexpensive it’s no big deal.

Hi Mike

Welcome to our weekly newsletter series.

This week Wayne tells us about his Poodle cross “Sumo”…….

“We have a crossed breed Poodle/Terrier and training him is
extremely important to us since we live in high rise apartment…..”

We also hear from Veronica who needs help with her Golden Retriever
puppy……

“I have two problems with my 16 week old Golden Retriever puppy.
He is adorable in so many ways and we all love him, but we had a 16
year old Golden who died in April, so going from that to a puppy is
fairly difficult to say the least……..”

Hi Dog-Secrets,

Here is your next dog food recipe, compliments of
doginfosecrets.com :

Ellie’s Dog Loaf

2 1/8 cups water
2 cups brown rice
2 large potatoes
2 large carrots
1 1/8 pounds pumpkin
2 cloves garlic
3/4 bunch silver beet
1 cup whole meal pasta — or Soya pasta
2 cups rolled oats
1 cup whole meal flour
1 1/8 pounds mince (or liver or fish)
3 eggs

Boil the rice in water for 10 - 15 minutes and chop the veggies (I
put them through the food processor) Add the veggies and pasta to
the rice and cook for 10 minutes.

Turn off the heat and leave to
cool (not vital if you’re like me and in a rush!) Add mince, eggs,
herbs, rolled oats and flour and mix together. Add more oats or
flour if mixture is sticky (should be like a fruit cake mix).

Spoon into oiled and floured loaf tins and bake in a hot oven 180
degrees CENTIGRADE for 1 hour.

Remove from tins ,turn oven off and return loaves to oven for 5 -
10 minutes to firm bottom crust.

Take out of oven, leave to cool and use immediately or wrap in foil
and freeze.

Makes about 3 - 4 loaves.

Thanks,
Mike Gates
Hey Dog-Secrets,

Here’s Today’s Joke: Why do dogs wag their tails?
Because no one else will do it for them.

*********************************

Reward training your dog

Reward training is quite possibly one of the oldest methods of
training dogs, dating back to the days when people started trying
to domesticate wild animals.

It is probably the method of dog training that most of us are
familiar with, and it is a natural instinct to reward the dog when
they perform the task that we have asked of them.

Some people prefer to use a combination of the reward training
methods and the leash and collar training to get the best out of
their dog in the least time.

Some dogs respond better to reward training than leash and collar
training so your decision might depend on what method you see
working the best with your dog.

More Information:
doginfozone.com/likes/train

Reward training for dogs, has seen a remarkable increase in
popularity over recent years with many people finding this as their
preferred method of training their new puppies.

There is no definitive answer as to what the best type of dog
training is, as some dogs respond better to one technique than
others.

There are certainly some advanced techniques that are taught in the
top dog training manuals that will ensure you train your dog,
faster and easier than trying to do so on your own.

Most dogs will respond to some extent, to either method of
training, and any training is certainly better than none, even if
you only teach your dog the most basic commands.

Reward training is even used for dogs that work in the military and
police.

Those dogs that are used for scent detection and tracking are also
often trained using some form of reward training.

Generally, reward training is in the form of some type of food
reward.

More Information:

Hi Mike

Welcome to our weekly newsletter series. This week Maria from New
York says…

“I wanted to send you a testimonial on how wonderful your book was,
and how much it helped my little Sydney, who is a year and a half
old yorkie. Thank you for your help! Sydney is my one and a half
year old yorkie who was having problems barking whenever anyone
came to the door…”

And we hear from Tom who has a house training problem with his
Labradoodle. He writes…

“My 4.5 month old mini labradoodle (male) is kept inside and we
crate him at night and various other times throughout the day when
we are home. When out of the crate he knows to go to the door and
bark for us to let him out to go to the toilet (most of the time,
there are occasional accidents) and manages to hold out through the
